It’s hot. It’s sweaty. It’s Singapore. That is our way of life. Living damn near the equator does that. However, personal hygiene is a big thing here. So more often than not, every person on the street has some kind of anti-perspirant/deodorant/on. Nothing wrong with that. In fact, I advocate the usage of such products. But do you know what is actually in your product?
A lot of time anti-perspirants contain aluminium, which clogs your pores, which means you don’t really sweat. Which is kind of good right? Wrong it prevents toxins from being expelled from the body. Common senses tells us we don’t want to accumulate toxins in our body. So what do we do? We look for natural deodorants for help.
Natural deodorants often use baking soda as a substitute. Alkaline in nature, it can upsets your skin’s natural pH level and could leave you with a nasty rash. It’s good if you don’t have sensitive skin, and mine isn’t. So it should work right?
Nope. I tried a natural deodorant with baking soda, and after use I got pimples and clogged pores around my underarm area. And it made my hyperpigmentation even worse! It really was a nightmare! Trying to find the perfect deodorant free of all the nasties and because I’m an animal love it has to be cruelty-free!

What did I do next? I did what any teen would do. I googled until I found a solution.
I stumbled upon @koparibeauty on Instagram, and I realised they have a deo without the nasties. But I was a skeptic, yeah it might work for people in a cooler climate or people who don’t sweat very much. But here in Singapore, I need only the best. Will it withstand Singapore’s hot and humid climate? Or will it crumble.
I purchased it at Sephora for SGD 25, and my wallet cried a little. But to my surprise, it felt heavy when held and when I opened to inspect it- there was actually more product in it then I expected.
The original version has a light coconut milk scent, which I enjoy. But if you’re not a fan, they have other scents such as beach- which is a fresher scent and charcoal? (Smells woodsy)
A little background information about me, I’m currently interning. My office is in the middle of Botanics Garden. I do a lot of husbandry work, I walk more than I should in the sun, I do fieldwork at noon sometimes. So I was really putting it to the test.
I must admit the first 1-2 weeks when I applied the deo, It didn’t last. Around 3pm, I could smell myself. And if I could smell myself, I’m pretty sure my peers could too. However, the website did say your pits do go through a purge when you switch to natural deodorant. It’s normal and it shouldn’t last more than 4 weeks.
After about 3 weeks, I realised my skin under my arms wasn’t as dark as it used to be. Make no mistake my hyperpigmentation is still there, but I could tell there wasn’t any new patches of uneven skin, which is a good sign. Also no clogged pores and no pimples!
And after using it for 2 months, I finished the deo and I must say I’m a convert. I did repurchase the deo, this time I bought 2! I bought the travel sized version, just to keep on me when I need a little more help. There are days, where it doesn’t last 5pm but I don’t blame it.
What I do is that I use wet wipes to clean my underarm area and reapply the deo. I have only ever done this twice in these 2 months and I don’t blame the deo. It really just was way too hot and way too sweaty! I was in the sun from 12-4pm. The fact that it could withstand the heat and my sweat to begin with, is impressive.
So rest assured, to all my tropical city girls- this deo does work in Singapore’s hot ah sweaty climate. An all natural deodorant that doesn’t clog your pores and doesn’t break you out? It exists.
Kopari’s Coconut Deo is 25SGD but it does last 2 months and is cruelty free. I think as consumers, we should invest in products that makes us feel better without the expense of others whenever possible.
Not to mention, they did contribute to rebuild homes in Philippines where they source their coconuts from, which tells me that they do care about their source of ingredients and the people.
So I choose Kopari’s Coconut Deo as my go to. What’s your go to? Let me know here!
Till next time,
